Meaning	Local: The name was well established in Yorkshire. Its history was explained by Brand's History of Newcastle published in 1789. In 1619 Sir Robert Mansell built some glass-works at Newcastle, brining several skilled artisans, with their families, from France. Of these there were two brothers, married, called Teswicke. The surname spread with surprising rapidity, all the branches being very prolific. henzell and Tittery were two other French families introduced into Newcastle with the glass-work. The three names monopolized glassmaking in the district for generations.
