Meaning | The son of Gernegan. The second 'n' is excrescent. Similar on how Pottinger and Messinger relate to Potager and Messager. In some documents bearing the seal of Queen Elizabeth (1572), concerning the town of Yarmouth, Sir Henry Jerningham, knight, is set down as 'Sir Henry Jernegam' no less than three times. That Jerneganwas anciently a Christian name. In 1195, there was a fine levied of lands in Edricheston, in Warwickshire, between Reginald de Claverdon and Gernagan his brother, and about this time it was a commonname in France, as we find fromm Lobineau, in his History of Britain, where Jernegon de Pontchasteau and some others of the name are mentioned. | |
