Last Name GUDGE

Summary/Contribute

Meaning The son of Guch. This first name, probably used by both sexes, was well established for a time, and has left many descendants. In Yorkshire the last name seems to have settled down into Gutch, in Norfolk into Gooch; and Goodge, Goudge, Gudge, and Gouge are other more general variants. In Wales we could fine Gouch or Goch in the 14th century. Dr William Gouge, born 1575, was a learned Puritan, whose commentary on the Hebrew is still consulted. The 'd' in Goodge, etc is intrusive, but it is found so early as 1379.
