Last Name CHANDLEHOUSESummary/Contribute |
Meaning | Local: At the chanonhouse, i.e. the residence of the canon. A gentleman of this title was drowned in 1859 near New York. For many centuries the name was confined to Furness and the neighbouring district, and the last of the local branch died at the close of the 18th century. Shannon-house was an old farm by Pennington Church, near Ulverston. Seven hundred years ago it was the Chanon-house, where resided the canon of Conishead Priority, who undertook the parochial charge of the church at Pennington, then in the possession of the Augustinians. In old deeds it is written Chanonhouse and Channelhouse, and in the registers of Pennington and Ulverton both surname and place-name are found in every conceivable and inconceivable spelling, including the forbidding 'Charnel-house.' | |
