Meaning The son of Thorphin, a variant of Topping. Turpin was the Yorkshire form. Toppin, later Topping, with excrescent 'g,' was the Lancashire form. Tipping seems to have arisen in the neighbourhood of Preston, and is unquestionably a variant of Toppiing.
