Meaning Local: An old form of 'de la Zouch.' The baronial family who gave the suffix to Ashby-de-la-Zouch, county Leicester, were a branch of teh Earls f Brittany... The founder of the race in England was William le Zusche, who died in the first year of King John. At some point Roger calls la Zausche his father, and Alan, Earl of Brittany, his grandfather. Zouch signifies the stocke of a tree in the French tongue. Hence Zouch and its variants, such as Souch, Such, Sutch, are but equivalent to the English Stubbs. Stock, Stubbings, etc.
