The son of Summer. Just as ecclessiastical seasons gave us Noel Pentecost, Pask, Christman, etc, so several centuriesearler popular names for children were descriptive of the natural season in which the child was born, or even the state of the weather. Hence such personal names as Snow, Storm, Winter, Summer, Spring, etc. Such local names as Somerby, Somercoates, Somerford, Somersby, Somersham, Somerton, all implying that the first settler bore the name of Somer.
So called, probably, from the season summer. The word is derived from the Saxon 'Sumer;' Celtic or Gaelic, 'samh,' the sun. 'Summer,' one who casts up an account. The name may be a corruption of 'Sumner.' | |
