Meaning |
The son of Randolph. Randle was the favourite nickname form, and the centuries held its own as a first name in Cheshire on account of the popularity of Randle, Earl of Chester, the Crusader. Rand was another abbreviation, and to it we owe Rand, Rands, and Ranson. With the diminutive 'kin' added we get Rankin, Ranken, and Ranking. Ralph was, however, the most generally favoured corruption of Radolph.
