Meaning The son of Richard, from the nickname Hick or Higg, whence Higgs, and the diminutives Higgin, Giggins, and Higginson. The pet form of Hick was Hickey. The Hick was the nickname of Richard, for a time rivalling Dick, is clearly manifested. Roger, Robert, and Richard, the then three popular boys' names in R, produced three nicknames in D, viz. Dodge, Dob, and Dick. They also produced three nicknames in H, viz. Hodge, Hob, and Hick.
