Meaning Local: Of the barton, literally the barley-croft. 'Bere,' barley, and 'tun,' an enclosure. Afterwards barton got the secondary sense of a courtyard. Of Barton. There are twenty-six parishes so called in Crockford. The origin is the same for both meanings with the difference, that barton, the single enclosure, had already grown into Barton, the hamlet or town.
